Welcome Pack 1



Valls, head of the region of Alt Camp. The left plane of the Francolí river is occupied by the municipal term of Valls; the river flows along all the term and picks up the torrent waters. Valls in the main nucleus of the region communications, as the different routes have a starting point or a confluence to Valls. We also should notice the Valls is located inside the big lines of communication of Catalonia (freeway AP-2, railways, etc.)

In the scope of agriculture, Valls continues cultivating the dry lands cultivations, such as the vine, cereals, carobs, olives tree, almonds tree and hazels. We shall point out the important vine and wine production, which were the predominant crops between the XVII and the XIX centuries. The cultivations is irrigated lands (fruit trees, vegetables, etc.); they follow an old tradition ar since the XII century they have notices about droughts and dams. The industrialization started at the XIX century and has become the main economic activity of Valls. The industrial estate of Valls (1964) concentrates an important industrial quality and counts with good communications. This fact has facilitate the industrial introduction in the metallurgical, electronically components and furniture sectors, amongst others. Valls is also an important commercial and services center: the Wednesday market (1210) and the fruits and vegetables market of each Saturday, are two of the more traditional events. The Firagost also stands out: it is a show or sample of agricultural products and machinery that attract thousand of visitors every year.







The education centers, sport facilities and the Hospital of Valls are the main services. The historical and artistic hermitage and the deeply rooted tradition of the castles, and the very famous "Calçotades" in the gastronomic framework have make deserve the popularity of Valls and the Alt Camp region.

The old nucleus is very well defined because of the good preservation of the walls since the last century. The streets that involve this nucleus still keep the wall names (Castell wall, Sant Francesc wall, etc).


OTHER VILLAGES
PICAMOIXONS - This village is located on the left side of the Francolí's river, lower waters running of the Riba. It is known as a railway link point of the lines from Lleida to Reus and Tarragona, and from Barcelona to Lleida passing through Vilanova. This village has a very large history that begins with the order that Pere de Vilagrassa received from the archbishop Guillem de Torroja and from the king Alfons I in 1171 to repopulate and fortification the place. It is a decentralized municipal identity since 1997. The church of Sant Salvador is a building built in 1906, which combines Romanesque and gothic elements.

FONTSCALDES - This village is situated at 6 km. from Valls in the direction of Lilla. Since the XII century it belongs to Valls. A furnace of painted Iberian ceramics was excavated, corresponding to the II centuries before Christ, which did possible to recover diverse pieces that are in the Valls Museum and in the Archaeological Museum of Barcelona. The Sant Simó's Parrochial Church is a building of a unique nave with buttresses and lateral chapels. The bell tower has a squared base and two towers of eight equal sides with a glazed pyramid.

MASMOLETS - It is at 4 km. in direction to Montblanc. It belongs to Valls since the XIII century. The church of Sant Roc was built upon the remains of the ancient castle.
